Mark Lewis - Associate Professor: Co-Director
Mark Lewis came to Wheaton College in 1995, after living for 14 years in New York City where he made his living as an actor in theater and television. His career as a teacher springs from an ongoing relationship with Master Teacher Michael Howard, who Mark has known since 1987. At Wheaton, Mark covers the Acting side of the Theater curriculum, directs two plays a year in Arena Theater, and leads Workout, Arena Theater’s core group. In ten years, Wheaton has sent many students on to well-regarded MFA-Acting Programs, and on into a life in the professional theater. Mark’s interest in staying connected with these individuals, and in connecting them to students currently studying theater at Wheaton has prompted him to explore scholarship that connects these groups for their mutual benefit. Mark is married to actor Mary Ellen Stuart, and they have three daughters from The People’s Republic of China.
Michael Stauffer - Associate Professor: Co-Director
Michael Stauffer has been teaching theater at Wheaton College for over 25 years. During that time he has also been a freelance designer in the Chicago area, including extensive design work at Willow Creek Community Church. A triple threat designer, Michael also enjoys directing which he does every year as part of the season for the Arena Theatre at Wheaton College. Living in Chicago gives him the opportunity to see some of the best theater in the country on a regular basis. This, coupled with frequent study trips to Europe with his students, has helped Michael develop a keen eye for a physical and visual approach to the theater experience. This continues to inform his teaching, directing and design work.
Andy Mangin - Technical Director
Andy has been Technical Director at Arena Theater for a couple of years. He had spent the previous 4 years in Los Angeles building furniture and acting. Working with the designers and director, his primary concern is getting all the technical elements of the season's shows in working shape. He is part producer, carpenter, and designer in reaching that end. That takes him from trips to antique stores to spending the afternoons building with students. A graduate of Wheaton, he pursued an MFA in Acting for the Southern Methodist University. Andy co-taught Acting 1 with Mark Lewis and frequently works with students in a directing capacity. He continues to foster a love of the design and construction of original furniture on his ManginWorks website. He and his beautiful wife, Katy, have two children.
