Phone System to Allow Custom Caller ID

On August 11, we will perform an upgrade on our campus VoIP System. This upgrade will allow you to customize your user name displayed in Caller ID. During the upgrade, phone services will be intermittently unavailable.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Provides security-related patches and bug fixes.
  • Implements feature enhancements, such as the ability to customize your user name that displays in Caller ID. This way, you can replace your formal name with your preferred name.

Impact on College Community

On August 11 from 10 to 11:30 PM, the campus phone system and voicemail services will be intermittently unavailable.

Setting a Complex Voicemail PIN to Improve Security

We're improving voicemail security by making sure that your voicemail PIN is complex enough to prevent unauthorized access.

After July 6, you will be required to set a new PIN the next time you sign in to your voicemail if your old PIN was not sufficiently complex.

Instructions

When you dial your voicemail on your phone after July 6, you will hear a prompt that says, "Your PIN has expired. You must reset your PIN. Enter a new PIN followed by #."

Enter a complex PIN. If your previous PIN was complex, you may reuse that PIN.

A complex PIN fits the following requirements:

  • Is 6-64 numbers long
  • Three or more numbers cannot be duplicated in succession (111222, 222222, etc.)
  • Three or more numbers cannot be sequential (123956, 321869, etc.)
  • Cannot include your phone extension

You can also set your new PIN by signing in with your NetID and password at voicemail.wheaton.edu.

Installation of Phones in Conference and Seminar Rooms

Beginning in May, we will install phones in every conference and seminar room on campus.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Provides an easy way to do audio conferencing
  • Allows for emergency notifications in rooms that do not currently have phones

Impact on College Community

Beginning in April, we will contact departments who own or supervise a conference or seminar room to discuss the installation of the phone(s).

The phone model we are providing is the Cisco 7811, which includes a built-in speakerphone that can be used for audio conferencing. Departments can purchase a different model of phone for us to install if they would like.

Phones Intermittently Unavailable During Maintenance

On April 2 starting at 11pm, we will be performing maintenance on the campus phone network. During this time, you may experience intermittent disruption of the phone system.

Key Features and Benefits

This is a standard update that includes fixes for known issues.

Impact on College Community

Anyone who tries to make a phone call from a desk phone to an off-campus phone will be unable to do so while the maintenance is being performed. In addition, incoming calls will be routed through our backup system, and callers will need to enter the extension a second time before the call goes through.

We expect that the phones will be affected for 30-60 minutes between 11pm and 6am on April 2 and 3.
