LISTSERV Mailing Lists Launching in February

As we continue to improve Wheaton College's internal communication processes, we're pleased to announce the upcoming launch of LISTSERV.

By the end of February, all departments will have access to LISTSERV, an email subscription and mailing list management tool that replaces our current email notification systems, such as Majordomo. LISTSERV provides another channel for campus communications, and adds an excellent tool to assist in the effort to get information in the hands of the intended audience.

Key Benefits and Features

  • Improves security by allowing us to retire an older system used for campus notifications
  • Allows essential or emergency messages to be distributed to all students, faculty, and/or staff
  • Allows students, faculty, and staff to unsubscribe from certain lists
  • Allows students, faculty, and staff to subscribe to lists for campus groups that interest them
  • Allows departments or groups to request subscription-based mailing lists that allow them to communicate information to interested faculty, staff, and students
  • Increases effectiveness of announcements by allowing departments to send targeted emails
  • Helps reduce email inbox clutter

Impact on College Community

All departments will be contacted by the end of February, and will be able to use LISTSERV to send email notifications. Departments that send critical or required information will be able to send to all faculty, staff, and students. Other types of information should continue to use the channels of communications that were introduced last year, and, upon request, will be able to use a subscription-based LISTSERV mailing list.

Cognos Analytics Launching January 27

On January 27, we are upgrading to Cognos Analytics, the newest version of IBM’s reporting tool.

  • Provides additional features and an updated interface.

  • The update will take place automatically at 8am on January 27, 2017.
  • During the transition to Cognos Analytics, Cognos BI will still be available

Doubling Our Bandwidth: Internet2 Comes to Wheaton College

Effective Date: January 3 - 4, 2017

From 10 PM on January 3 until 1 AM on January 4, we will connect the campus network to Illinois Century Network as well as Internet2. Around 10 PM, there will be a brief network outage. This outage is expected to last for less than 30 minutes.

Key Benefits and Features

  • Connecting to the Illinois Century Network and Internet2 will double Wheaton's network bandwidth. This increases the amount of traffic the network can handle and will improve performance.
  • This upgrade will provide redundant Internet service that results in a more reliable network.
  • Internet2 will improve the functionality of Wheaton's high performance computing cluster and provide access to cutting-edge network tools.

Impact on College Community

  • Around 10 PM on January 3, 2017, there will be a network outage lasting fewer than 30 minutes.
  • After the upgrade, the campus network bandwidth will double in capacity, improving performance across campus and providing new functionality to the high performance computing cluster.

LISTSERV: Improving Email Notifications

In January 2017, LISTSERV will come to Wheaton College. LISTSERV is a mailing list service that will replace the current system of email notifications. LISTSERV is being launched as part of the new Internal Digital Notification Policy.

LISTSERV improves on the old notification system in many ways. One of the key features is the ability for recipients to unsubscribe from nonessential lists or subscribe to lists for campus groups that interest them. This will also allow students, faculty, and staff to request mailing lists that allow for easier communication, collaboration, and information distribution.

Another component of this service is LISTSERV Maestro, which allows departments or groups to send formatted newsletter-style emails to subscribers. This will help generate interest for groups that want to send subscribers or club members regular updates about group activity.

Conference Now to Replace Meet-Me

Effective Date: January 3, 2017

Beginning January 3, 2017, Conference Now will replace Meet-Me as the College's conference calling service. Both Meet-Me and Conference Now are currently available while Meet-Me is phased out.

Key Benefits and Features

  • Conference Now is more secure that Meet-Me.
  • Meeting organizers have a individual meeting code that passcode-protects conference calls.
  • Each meeting has an access code for participants.
  • Conference Now accommodates up to 16 callers.

Impact on College Community

Meet-Me will not be available after January 3, 2016. If you used Meet-Me, please contact us for a Conference Now meeting number.
