About Stewart DeSoto
As a graduate student in Professor Charles P. Slichter's research group at the University of Illinois, Dr. DeSoto published the results of his Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) experiments conducted in a novel class of organic superconductors with a quasi two-dimensional crystal structure in the Physical Review Letters. His research proved that the spin-lattice relaxation mechanism for these superconductors was dominated by motion of the fluxoids, or little lines of magnetic field, poking through the material. Dr. DeSoto met his wife, Laura, when both were students at Wheaton. They married in 1993 and now have two children, Gabriella and Zachary. They both love to explore the outdoors- rock climbing, backpacking and mountain climbing are among their favorite recreational pursuits.

Dr. DeSoto's is currently interested in exploring the observational evidence for the existence of Intermediate Mass Black Holes (IMBH). At present, there is strong evidence for the reality of both stellar mass and supermassive black holes, which leads to the intriguing question- why aren't there black holes of in-between sizes? There is some indication that such "goldilox" black holes might exist in certain dwarf galaxies, but their existence is still in the speculative stage. Dr. DeSoto is using spectral data in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to search for observational clues in so-called "pea" galaxies, and in star clusters in nearby galaxies.
