About Ezer Kang
The microbe is nothing; the terrain everything” (L. Pasteur, 1895). HIV/AIDS discriminately proliferates in socially and economically disadvantaged terrains. How does a broadened understanding of such terrains help inform interventions and guide policies aimed to redeem the humanity of marginalized persons living with the virus? This question has guided Dr. Kang’s work with undocumented Asian immigrants, perinatally HIV-infected children and adolescents, adults triply diagnosed with HIV, psychiatric illness, and substance dependence in Harlem, NY, and families affected by iatrogenic pediatric HIV in rural China and Kazakhstan. In addition to his teaching and current research in Chiang Mai, Kigali, Delhi, and Chicago, Dr. Kang continues his clinical work with adolescents living with perinatally acquired HIV at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago (Division of Infectious Disease), and adults with HIV/AIDS at Lawndale Christian Health Center. In his personal time, Dr. Kang enjoys running and traveling with his wife and two daughters.

Dr. Kang’s research broadly examines how individual, family, and structural factors interact to influence socioemotional functioning among the urban poor - with a focus on persons living with HIV in resource-limited settings. His research to date has focused on disparities in access to HIV care and stigma among undocumented Asian immigrants, protective and risk behaviors among adolescents with perinatally acquired HIV, faith-based and public health partnerships in HIV prevention and care, and influences of urban poverty on childhood neurocognitive and behavioral outcomes. Dr. Kang works collaboratively with students, community-based organizations, and researchers on these issues in the Community Health and Justice Lab at Wheaton College.
