Courses

Wheaton College currently offers the following courses for Mandarin Chinese.

  • CHIN 101 Elementary Mandarin Chinese. Beginning Chinese with emphasis on understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. Laboratory practice.
  • CHIN 102 Elementary Mandarin Chinese. Beginning Chinese with emphasis on understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. Laboratory practice.
  • CHIN 130 Accelerated Elementary Mandarin Chinese. Intensive study of beginning Mandarin Chinese with emphasis on understanding and speaking and a particular focus on reading and writing: covers material of CHIN 101 and 102 in one semester. Recommended for heritage speakers of Chinese (students with native-like speaking and listening skills who lack reading and writing ability); also open to students who have completed up to two years of prior study and have strong listening and speaking skills and to students who place into second semester Chinese (CHIN 102). Final enrollment may be subject to placement test score and/or instructor recommendation. Laboratory work.
  • CHIN 201 Intermediate Mandarin Chinese. Reading, composition, and conversation with emphasis on the culture of China. Laboratory practice. The general education foreign language competency requirement is met by passing the final exam of this course.
  • CHIN 310 Chinese Character Acquisition. Surveys history and development of Chinese writing system.  Introduces fundamental knowledge of Chinese characters, from basic elements such as radicals to writing via stroke orders.  Special focus on connections between shapes and meanings of Chinese characters.  Development of character acquisition through interactive exercises, rhymes, and illustrations.  Can be taken as co-requisite with CHIN 201 or above.  
  • CHIN 320 Chinese Through Scripture. Introduction to Chinese Bible and its various translations with selected readings from the Old and New Testaments.  Acquisition of basic Chinese vocabulary of Christian faith.  Discussion of faith issues in a Chinese context with emphasis on Christian perspectives of Chinese culture.  Intensive practice in character recognition and oral communication.  Can be taken as co-requisite with CHIN 201 or above.
  • CHIN 330 Chinese Conversation. Intensive practice in oral communication and listening comprehension with emphasis on natural spoken expression based on audio materials, videos, and reading of authentic texts on topics of Chinese culture, contemporary Chinese life, and social issues. Dual emphasis on language learning and building of cultural awareness. Students will also develop reading and writing skills through learning additional Chinese characters. Prerequisite: CHIN 201, competency equivalent or permission of the instructor.
  • Chinese 340 Intro to Chinese Culture. Students gain their initial understanding of Chinese customs and cultural essence prior to their study in China.  Special emphasis is placed on comparing and examining the different cultures and customs of both the East and the West to help students get a deeper understanding of China and its culture. Reading materials and daily journals are required.  Offered in China only.  Su 2012 (2)
  • CHIN 390 Advanced Chinese in China. On-site study of Chinese history, society, culture, and language.  Prerequisite: CHIN 201.  Offered in China only. Su 2012 (4)
  • CHIN 480 Special Topics in Chinese Language and Culture.  On-site study of Chinese history, society, culture, and language.  Prerequisite: CHIN 330.  Offered in China only. Su 2012 (4)
