A minor in English requires a minimum of 20 hours. Students must take either Literature 101 (Classics of Western Literature) or Literature 215 (Classical and Early British Literature); either Literature 105 (Literature of the Modern World) or 216 (British Literature, 17th--20th Century); and one course in American Literature. Additional courses are at the student's discretion, except that if a student takes neither Literature 215 or 216, one of the remaining courses must be a course in English literature. If possible, students should avoid taking both 101 and 215, and both 105 and 216, as there is a good deal of overlap between these courses. Writing 103 and 104 do not count toward a minor, but all other writing courses do.
