M.Ed., Interdisciplinary Studies in Curriculum and Instruction, National-Louis University, Wheaton, IL, 2001

B.A., Elementary Education, Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL, 1993

Professional and Personal Interests

Karen Felker comes to Wheaton with nine years of experience teaching elementary education in Wheaton-Warrenville Community Unit School District 200.  Since 2009, Karen has had the great opportunity to work and partner with the surrounding school districts by coordinating and supervising clinical placements along with teaching coursework.   She continues to work diligently on creating and maintaining positive relationships among students, teachers, administrators, parents, colleagues, faculty, and the community.

She believes the purpose of education is to prepare and guide each unique individual to live as a lifelong learner in our complex and changing society.  She is dedicated at providing every student with opportunities to strengthen and contribute their knowledge, skills, and talents in a positive, supportive learning environment.  Her educational plan is designed to motivate students to develop their physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual areas as she uses effective teaching methods and curriculum with a Christ-like love and focus.  By having the opportunity to train college students in becoming excellent teachers and role models for children, she is able to keep up with the present teaching practices and see teaching in another perspective.  She continues to be a dedicated elementary teacher by fulfilling her on-call substitute role for Wheaton-Warrenville C.U.S.D. 200, adapting to all grade levels, conducting quality teaching, and ensuring a positive learning environment.

In addition to her professional interests, Karen enjoys being the Children’s Music Director at her church in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and taking a leadership role on the Children’s Renovation Team.   She is married to Dave, a Wheaton Lietenant Firefighter, and has been blessed with twin daughters, Trista and Alicia.  She enjoys playing the piano, accompanying elementary school choirs, teaching her daughters to play the piano, designing and making Gingerbread Creations, traveling, watching her daughters swim for the Wheaton Swim Club, and spending time with her family and precious dog Pepper.

Education

B. A., Elementary Education, Calvin College, 1986

Professional and Personal Interests

Patti has worked at Wheaton College since 2006.  Her background as an elementary school teacher allowed her to teach 5th grade in Philadelphia, PA and at Rift Valley Academy in Kenya.  While working at RVA, Patti taught 6th grade, and started up a program to assist missionary families who were homeschooling their 1st-5th grade children.  After having the privilege of being a stay-at-home mom for 12 years, Patti now thoroughly enjoys being back in college!  Her favorite part of her job is the interaction with Wheaton students.

Patti is married to Kevin, who serves as a math teacher at Wheaton Academy.  Together, they have 4 wonderful children of their own, and are host parents for 3 international students who attend Wheaton Academy.  If there ever is any free time, Patti enjoys water skiing, bike riding, and scrap booking.

Education

B. A., Music Education, Samford University, 1983

M. A., Music: Vocal Performance, Arizona State University, 1985

Professional and Personal Interests

Following graduation, I married the marvelous Dr. Tracy McKenzie and worked for several years in the music industry. When the first or our three children arrived, I became a full-time homemaker and, when the oldest became school-aged, a homeschool teacher for the next seventeen years. In the summer of 2010, after twenty-two years in Seattle, WA, our clan moved to Wheaton and joined the Wheaton College community en masse. My husband is the current chair of the History Department, two of my children are Wheaton College students, and I am blessed to be a part of the community, as well, through my work with the wonderful professors, coworkers, and students of the Education Department.

When I’m not at work, I enjoy making/listening to music of all kinds, searching for “buried treasure” at resale shops, walking our family pooch (Maggie), and (most of all) spending time with my family.
