Stop 9- Buffington Pockets

Prev Stop

Buffington Pockets is a canyon that exposes light-colored, cross-bedded sandstones of the Aztec Fm. Wilson Cliffs/Muddy Mtn. thrust faults have moved older, Cambrian limestones and dolostones (Bonanza King Fm.) above the Jurassic sandstones! This reversal of stratigraphy due to crustal shortening along low angle reverse faults (thrusts) is common in mountain belts.

One of the highlights of hiking this beautiful canyon is seeing the ancient petroglyphs carved in the rocks by Native Americans. At this point, darkness forced the group to retreat to our rented van and return to the city.

We wondered if the millions of people who come to Las Vegas for the "entertainment" are even aware of the natural wonders God has provided for free right outside the city limits?
