Erosion along the axis of a faulted anticline has created the Bowl of Fire. An anticline is a broad upward fold in the crust. Red sandstones of the Jurassic Aztec Fm. are exposed in the valley floor, below younger, gray conglomerates of the Brownstone Basin Fm.
